On March 1st the sequester (across-the-board budget cuts) went into effect after Congress and the White House failed to reach a deficit reduction deal, as prescribed in the Budget Control Act of 2011. Unless legislative action is taken immediately WIC will experience a 5.1% funding cut, resulting in 600,000 mothers and children being cut from the program.
WIC has always received strong bipartisan support. It is a proven program which over the past 38 years has been shown to improve consumption of key nutrients, at-risk children’s health, growth and development, and reduce hunger.
Please reach out to your Members of Congress and urge them to pursue a balanced deficit reduction plan that protects WIC.
