Hannah RosenthalHannah Rosenthal is the State Department's newly appointed Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat anti-Semitism.

Sparked by the work and experience of her father, a rabbi and Holocaust survivor, and her own experience studying to become a rabbi, Hannah Rosenthal has led a life marked by activism and a passion for social justice.  She was involved in community organizing, and the antiwar and civil rights movements in the 1960s.  Today, she works to further social justice through advocacy and leadership development in her role at Wisconsin Physician Service Insurance Corporation, focusing on health care policy and prevention.

Rosenthal is an experienced speaker and presenter, a frequent resource to local and national media.  She skillfully addresses a variety of issues, such as comprehensive women’s health and reproductive rights; poverty and its impacts on women and children; and freedom from violence, including domestic and sexual abuse and harassment, sex trafficking and violence prevention.

For five years, Rosenthal was Executive Director of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs, an organization that develops consensus policy statements on domestic and international issues on behalf of the Jewish community in the United States.

In 1995, President Clinton appointed Rosenthal Midwest regional director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.  She chaired the 1992 Clinton-Gore campaign in Wisconsin and helped plan their 1996 re-election campaign as Executive Director of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.  From 1984 to 1993, Rosenthal led the Wisconsin Women’s Council.

In 2009, Rosenthal received the “Crystal Vision Award” from the Lions Clubs International - Wisconsin Chapter.  In 2008, Rosenthal was recognized as a Partner in Social Justice in Chicago, and in 2007, Women’s eNews named Rosenthal one of their 21 Leaders for the 21st Century.  She has also been included in the “Who’s Who Among Foundation Executives” in Crain’s Chicago Business.  In 2005, she was named by Jewish Women International as one of “Ten Women to Watch.”  She has been named one of the Forward Fifty’s Top Five, a list of the most influential Jews selected by the Forward, a national Jewish weekly; recognized as a Woman of Distinction by YWCA; and has been honored with the Equal Rights Award from the state of Wisconsin.

Rosenthal attended graduate school for rabbinical studies at Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem and Los Angeles, and holds a bachelor’s degree in religion from the University of Wisconsin.  Rosenthal has two grown daughters, Shira and Francie, who are busy mending the world with their mom.
