||2011 Congressional August Recess
The August Congressional Recess will start soon. Members of Congress will return to the district likely until after Labor Day. Many JCRCs have already arranged meetings with your Representatives and Senators during the recess. If you haven't already done so, we highly encourage you to schedule a time to meet with your legislators and their senior staff during this period. These district lobby visits are very powerful and provide opportunities to build and deepen relationships with your Members of Congress. In addition, this year we are encouraging you to hold site visits at one of your Jewish community agencies to highlight the importance of human needs program dollars to the local community. Attached are brief background overviews about JCPA priority issues that are timely to discuss during these meetings.
Included in this packet are three important resources:
- International Affairs Briefing Paper: This document provides background information about the current risks to the International Affairs budget and how Members of Congress can protect against further cuts. It is also designed to be shared with your legislators and/or their staffs. If you would like a Word version of this document so that you can add your organization’s logo and contact information or if you would like assistance in doing this, please contact the JCPA Washington Office.
- Medicaid and Human Needs Briefing Paper: This document provides background information about the risks to federal human needs funding. We are particularly concerned about Medicaid and the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). It is also designed to be shared with your legislators and/or their staffs. If you would like a Word version of this document so that you can add your organization’s logo and contact information or if you would like assistance in doing this, please contact the JCPA Washington Office.
- Medicaid Site Visit Toolkit: This how-to document will help you plan an effective site visit. This is one of the most effective advocacy techniques and helps Members of Congress, particularly Representatives, understand the importance of Medicaid and this program’s direct impact on constituents.
The legislative staff of the JCPA Washington Office is available for community consultations on an ongoing basis. We are happy to serve as a resource for your JCRC, answer any questions about these materials, or provide additional information about other issues of concern. Please feel free to contact us in the JCPA Washington Office whenever we can be helpful.
