JCPA appalled by recent shooting at Oregon community college
Washington, D.C., - The Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA), in response to today’s shooting at Oregon community college, issued the following statement:
The JCPA is appalled by this latest senseless shooting. We pray for the victims and their families, and we call for action to save more innocent lives from meeting the same tragic end as the victims today. The overwhelming carnage from the endless stream of mass is utterly unacceptable. We recognize and respect the right of Americans to own guns, and we are not seeking to undermine in any respect the right of law abiding Americans to own handguns and rifles for legitimate purposes such as hunting, self-defense, and sport. We also recognize the need to increase security at certain places of public and private gathering. At the same time, we refuse to accept a dystopian environment where schools, houses of worship, community centers, shopping malls, theaters, and other venues are either in lockdown mode or where more guns are considered the preferred solution for public safety. Comprehensive action is needed to restore the safety of our schools, communities and public spaces. While no single solution will prevent all future tragedies, we are committed to supporting reasonable efforts to save lives.
JCPA, the public affairs arm of the organized Jewish community, serves as the national coordinating and advisory body for the 16 national and 125 local agencies comprising the field of Jewish community relations.
