JCPA Praises Gilad Shalit's Homecoming and Israel's Courageous Leaders
After 5 years of captivity, Gilad Shalit was returned to Israel today. JCPA President Rabbi Steve Gutow and Chair Dr. Conrad Giles released the following statement:
“Today has been long in coming for both Israel and the Shalit family. Many have prayed, hoped, and worked for his release. It is a rare and beautiful moment when we can all share in such collective relief. As relieved as we all are to see Gilad free and home, we understand the complicated nature of Gilad’s release. The release of prisoners was a courageous decision by Israeli leaders. It was no doubt a high price to pay and tears at deep wounds for a nation scarred with decades of indiscriminate violence.
“Today’s exchange marks the end of a painful episode for Israel. We wish Gilad, his family, and all Israelis, peace and pray that this will be an opportunity for new beginnings. This week is Sukkot, a festival of celebration and ingathering. Today, we are grateful to be able to do both.”
