On a Palestinian farm in the Gush Etzion area, the roots of a movement are taking hold. A former Palestinian militant, Ali Abu Awwad, and his Jewish settler partners, including Rabbi Hanan Schlesinger, are building peace--one interaction at a time--by bringing Palestinians together in relationship with Jews. The group is called Shorashim, which means roots in Hebrew (the group uses the Arabic equivalent name as well), and the modest patch of land has received 7,000 visitors in the last year. Recently the pair traveled to the United States to share a message of understanding, non-violence, and transformation. Awwad and Schlesinger visited the Council on Foreign Relations on June 3 for an event organized by the JCPA, and have also spoken to groups at the Claremont Lincoln University in California and the JCRC of Greater Washington.
