Since 2001 more than 8,600 rockets and mortars have been fired from Gaza toward Israeli civilian population centers. Since Israel’s withdrawal in 2005 there have been more than 6,365 rockets and mortar attacks. More than 3,000 were fired in 2008 alone.

Instead of state-building in Gaza, Hamas dedicated its resources, including international aid, toward terrorizing Israel’s civilian population centers. Israel’s southern cities and towns within 20 miles of the Gaza Strip, including Sderot and Ashkelon, have suffered the brunt of this terror. They are deliberately and indiscriminately attacked by rockets, often dozens of times a day. For 8 years Israel has been under attack by Hamas.

On December 27, 2008 - January 17, 2009 Israel exercised its right of self-defense and launched Operation Cast Lead against the Hamas terror infrastructure in the Gaza Strip.
