Break Our Oil Addiction

As high energy costs are challenging households across America, Congress will vote on several comprehensive energy proposals in the coming days. Please urge our elected officials to support a comprehensive energy plan that includes a renewable electricity standard requiring that at least 15% of US energy come from clean-burning, renewable sources; a provision to extend and expand renewable energy tax incentives to encourage continued investment in renewable energy; updated energy codes for new buildings; and a significant investment in public transit. By supporting clean-burning renewable energy and efficiency, we can reduce our dependence on foreign oil, sustain our fragile environment and build a robust national economy.

The Jewish community has long advocated for energy policies that reduce our dependence on foreign oil, sustain our fragile environment and build a robust national economy. I am writing to urge your support for clean energy solutions, which will help our nation advance all three of these interests. The decisions you make today will affect our health and prosperity for years to come. For far too long, our nation has relied heavily on foreign energy sources that pollute our air and water. I urge you to reduce that reliance by investing in renewable energy and energy-efficiency technologies that offer us a real path to energy independence. In particular, we must extend the renewable energy tax credits; mandate that a significant part of US energy come from clean-burning, renewable sources; improve our outdated building codes; and invest resources in public transit. These provisions will help break our addiction to oil, control spiraling energy costs, create new jobs, protect our health, and build a strong foundation to serve our nation's future energy needs. I urge you to vote for the economic and environmental benefits of renewable energy and energy efficiency.
